Annona Health PL was formed in 2006, with the specific task of marketing value added custard apple products. "Annona" is the genus name for all species of custard apples. This business is an extension of two long established custard apple growing businesses located in Northern NSW and Central Queensland.
Custard Apples are a sweet tropical fruit grown along the eastern seaboard of Australia from North Queensland to Northern NSW. The varieties grown in Australia are unique to Australia, being superior in taste and quality to custard apple varieties grown in other parts of the world.
The fresh fruit market is well established, with Asian Australians being the main consumers. Fresh custard apples, being naturally sweet, are popular with Australian consumers. In the semi processed form it can be used as an ingredient in desert recipes and drinks, as a condiment to curries or a sauce with a difference for seafood or similar dishes.
The Australian custard apple industry has identified the food service industry, chefs and cooks, retail and home consumption, as potential markets that requires development. Research has identified the difficulty in ripening and time taken in preparing fresh custard apples for use in recipes is a disincentive for chefs. The custard apple industry in Australia is based on family sized farms and it is anticipated that this new process, will assist growers of fresh fruit to remain viable and sustainable.
A technique has been developed to produce a convenient semi processed, frozen custard apple product, with no seeds. This will reduce the preparation time necessary by the food service industry to further add value and create new recipes.
Fruit is sourced from Food Safe accredited custard apple farms in Queensland and NSW, and processed in HACCP registered processing rooms, packaged in food safe plastic containers, frozen to -18 degrees. HACCP is an internationally recognized food safety system.
Package sizes at present are 1 litre, 500mls and 150mls. Larger package sizes can be arranged.
The new product is 100% Australian custard apple fruit, with no preservatives or additives. It is totally natural, but frozen. It has significant health benefits. It is sold under the Registered Trade Marked brand of
